CAPS Diversity & Inclusion

Land Acknowledgement Statement

We would like to acknowledge that all USU courses and services are provided on the traditional lands of the Diné, Goshute, Paiute, Shoshone, and Ute Peoples past and present, and honor the land itself and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations.

CAPS Diversity and Inclusion Statement

The Utah State University Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) acknowledges that power structures in society and complexities of diversity create an imbalance in power, privilege, mental health resources, and opportunities among students. Therefore, we are committed to supporting diversity and inclusion within our agency, and we aim to create a system that promotes equity for every student. We also aspire to create a safe environment for students to discuss issues related to social justice and strive to eliminate barriers for students to access resources and opportunities.

It is our core value to support diversity and inclusion and to foster a campus climate where equity and respect are present. We respect the values of a diverse community inclusive of differences in characteristics of age, ethnic/racial identities, nationality, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, body size and shape, religion and spirituality, socioeconomic status, ability status, veteran status, and political affiliation or ideology. In addition, we serve students with acceptance, compassion and support.

In order to continually provide culturally competent clinical services to USU students, we commit to providing ongoing training and opportunities to generate diversity-related conversations for CAPS staff and trainees. As a center, CAPS also strives to collaborate with other university offices and committees in support of the university-wide diversity goal. In addition, we continually investigate strategies and develop outreach and mental health prevention programs for traditionally underserved populations who might not seek counseling services directly.
